This time Joe had chosen Will it go round in Circles by Billy Preston (1972), for our Song Challenge. It is a song with unique mix of gospel, soul and funk. The lyrics are about love, perseverance, and the cyclical patterns of life (“Will it go round in circles? Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky?”)
I didn’t know the song but luckily, it wasn’t too difficult to learn. Billy Preston’s raw and expressive voice however, is so distinctive that I struggled to match his style at first. Instead of trying to imitate him, I decided to create contrast: I sang the verses softly and gently, then switched to a stronger, more powerful delivery for the chorus. To add depth, I layered in an octave-higher track and a second voice, giving it a choir-like effect. I also added the phrase “Round and Round” during the chorus to emphasize the song’s cyclical theme.
Hans tweaked the kick drums and added some sound effects, which gave our version a unique twist. He also took care of the video with the dancing people.

Je ne connaissais pas ce morceau, mais heureusement, il n’était pas trop difficile à apprendre. En revanche, la voix brute et expressive de Billy Preston est si caractéristique que j’ai d’abord eu du mal à m’en approcher. Au lieu d’essayer de l’imiter, j’ai choisi de créer un contraste : j’ai chanté les couplets avec douceur et délicatesse, puis j’ai passé à une interprétation plus puissante et énergique pour le refrain. Pour ajouter de la profondeur, j’ai superposé une piste une octave plus haute et une deuxième voix, ce qui donne un effet presque chorale. J’ai aussi ajouté la phrase « Round and Round » pendant le refrain pour souligner le thème cyclique de la chanson.
Hans, de son côté, a retouché les caisses claires et ajouté des effets sonores, ce qui a donné à notre version une touche originale. Il s’est également occupé de la vidéo avec les danseurs.
