The Boxer

November 3, 2026

My version of The Boxer (Simon and Garfunkel, from the album Bridge over Troubled Water, 1970)
The Boxer, Terri’s choice this time for our song challenge, is largely autobiographical: Paul Simon wrote it about his experiences as a young musician in the early 1960s, when he faced one rejection after another in the music industry. In interviews, he also pointed to his youth in Queens, New York, and the feeling of loneliness and alienation that marked it. The central theme of the song is poverty, loneliness, and surviving them — a fighter who keeps standing, no matter how many blows life deals.

For this song, I sang all the vocal parts myself. The instrumental solo is played for the first time on my melodica, nice sound. And for the iconic “lie-la-lie” chorus, the heartbeat of the song, I was joined by Hans and Lilly, whose voices turn that famous refrain into a true sing-along moment. As always, Hans did the producing and the video. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Ma version de The Boxer (Simon and Garfunkel, de l’album Bridge over Troubled Water, 1970)
