Taken by the North is a song that I have written and performed for the Singeo songwriting challenge april 2025. The inspiration of this song is Poppa, the Viking queen.
A friend did some research about my ancestors. It was quite interesting. Among them were Charlemagne, the four first kings of France, Pepin of Italy, and Rollo, the Viking king. There is a lot of information about the famous men who appear in my family tree, but I want to shine a light on their wives. They were essential to every branch of the family line. Remarkable women, strong women, courageous women, happy woman? Who were they? We know so little about them.
My first song is about Poppa of Bayeux, the wife of Rollo the Viking, who lived in the 10th century. She was reportedly captured by Rollo when he took Bayeux by force, and her father was killed during this conquest. The song tells the story of Poppa on the Viking ship, wondering what will happen to her. It conveys her sorrow, her uncertainty about her future, but also her hope that things might still turn out well.
It did, because she now stands as a significant but enigmatic figure at the crossroads of christian Frankish and Viking worlds, remembered primarily as the mother of Normandy’s ruling house.

Un ami a fait des recherches sur mes ancêtres. C’était assez intéressant. Parmi eux se trouvent Charlemagne, les quatre premiers rois de France, Pépin d’Italie et Rollon, le roi viking. Il existe beaucoup d’informations sur les hommes célèbres présents dans mon arbre généalogique, mais je veux mettre en lumière leurs épouses. Elles étaient essentielles à chaque branche de la lignée familiale. Des femmes remarquables, fortes, courageuses, heureuses ? Qui étaient-elles ? Nous en savons si peu sur elles.
Ma première chanson parle de Poppa de Bayeux, l’épouse de Rollon le Viking, qui a vécu au Xe siècle. Selon les récits, elle aurait été capturée par Rollon lors de la prise de Bayeux, et son père aurait été tué pendant cette conquête. La chanson raconte l’histoire de Poppa sur le navire viking, se demandant ce qui va lui arriver. Elle exprime sa tristesse, son incertitude quant à son avenir, mais aussi son espoir que les choses pourraient malgré tout bien se passer.
Et ce fut le cas, car elle est aujourd’hui considérée comme une figure importante mais énigmatique, à la croisée des mondes francs chrétiens et vikings, principalement connue comme la mère de la maison dirigeante de Normandie.
